Borojo (Borojoa patinoi) is a tree between 3 to 6 m in height. The fruit is large, between 7 to 12 cm in diameter, green colored and brown or black when ripe. The fruit contains an average of 330 seeds. Wild plant of the north western basin of the Amazon river, Borojo is found in Colombia where the annual average temperature is 28ºC and the relative humidity 85%.
The Borojo fruit weighs an average of 740 g with 88% pulp and 12% seeds and shell. Quite frequently, the seeds constitute up to 10% of the weigh of the fruit. The pulp of this fruit has high content of carbohydrates and calcium. The seeds have the following composition: humidity 36%, oils 0.9%, protein 11%, carbohydrates 13% and raw fiber 39%.
One doctor who spent years in the jungle together with the natives has stated:
"If Borojo could be grown on a large scale, it could address the problem of health and malnutrition in the world. It is so rich in minerals and nutritionals that no other fruit on this planet could compete with it".
Borojo's fresh pulp is used to prepare Jugo del Amor i.e. Juice of Love, jams, jellies, candies or wine, while the dry fruit powder is used for capsules, tablets or instant tea. The fruit is famous in Colombia for its aphrodisiac and anti cancerous properties. In fact it is highly energetic with soluble solids (30º Brix) consisting mainly of fructose, glucose and proteins with apparently non limiting amounts of essential amino acids. Borojo has one of the highest contents of phosphorus from all known fruits (160 mg/100 g of pulp) and one of the highest levels of water soluble B vitamins. Borojo has a high content of amino acids, a pound of this fruit is the equivalent of three pounds of fresh meat.
